If you're not sure when you will do something, you can do it Someday. Things 3 also introduces time-based reminders and the ability to do a task This Evening. When a task first shows up in Today, it shows up in a special list that lets you decide whether to include it in Today or leave it for Anytime. There's an expectation that you'll conduct a mini-review every day. Things 3 is better than Things 2 about that, adding the ability to add headers to projects and checklists (subtasks) to tasks. Projects can't have repeating tasks (yet), and your ability to nest is limited. Tasks are available to do Anytime unless you schedule them for an Upcoming date or choose to do them Today. Things is very opinionated about how you work. My last attempt was a separate list in Notes. I have tried using a Someday/Maybe context as well as a Someday/Maybe single-action project, but neither felt very good. While it supports putting projects on hold, OmniFocus does not have a very robust way of handling Someday/Maybe lists.

One of the annoying limitations of OmniFocus is there is not a way to have projects hang off of a single action list, so the hierarchy can sometimes look a little stupid (e.g., a Work area with a Work single action list and then a projects folder full of work projects). If I want to do something today probably, I flag it. I only use action groups to change the sequencing of actions. There are a number of approaches to implementing OmniFocus, but the one I take is to create toplevel folders to group together single action projects for my areas of focus with a per-area projects folder for my projects.
It is also very tempting to create deep hierarchies of projects nested within each other. This is a trap for new users because it is very tempting to put everything in OmniFocus. OmniFocus leaves it to the user to create a workflow. The big place where they diverge is workflows. It is not possible to create custom views or alter the layout of existing ones except to reorder tasks in a project or change the sort of Today. It does support some AppleScript, but it was not as nice as OmniFocus’s the last time I used it. Tasks cannot block each other, so you will see everything that is available regardless of order. OmniFocus is unique in that regard as far as I can tell.
Projects cannot be nested, but Things 3 does support headings within projects that are functionally similar to action groups in OmniFocus (minus the ability to arbitrarily nest them). If you want contexts, you have to create tags for contexts and filter by tag. Things offers a GTD-inspired model, but it is not specifically a GTD application. OmniFocus also has a robust AppleScript dictionary, and you can customize perspectives and their layouts but those are “Pro” features locked behind an IAP. You can nest projects as deeply as you’d like (nested projects are called action groups), and projects can contain repeating tasks. Tasks can be sequenced, so you will only see tasks that are not blocked by other tasks when looking at your contexts. Its tools for organizing your tasks are also more powerful. You can look at your tasks either in their projects or in their contexts. OmniFocus’s basic model is a more purist approach to GTD. That's a difficult question to answer because it depends heavily on your workflow and needs.
How does this compare to Omnifocus? I'm looking for something like both of these, but not sure what the advantages and disadvantages are.
